IT was a glorious night for Ireland’s passionate supporters in Cardiff last night – but England fans had cause to celebrate too after the Republic ended Wales’ hopes of qualifying for the World Cup.
The Boys in Green sealed their place in the qualification play-offs for Russia 2018 after an unforgettable 57th minute strike from James McClean – and English fans weren’t exactly sympathetic to the bitterly disappointed Welsh supporters.
A clip of the Wales squad celebrating England being knocked out of Euro 2016 by Iceland went viral last summer, before re-emerging last night as English supporters rubbed salt into Welsh wounds.
Three Lions fans immediately began sharing the clip after it was confirmed that Ireland ruined all hopes of Wales qualifying for next summer’s tournament.
Sharing the video on Twitter, one England fan said: “This was Wales celebrating England getting knocked out of #Euro2016. Feels an apt time to rewatch it. We'll send a postcard from Russia.”

Another wrote: “Yes Ireland! F*** Wales they celebrated like they won the World Cup when Iceland knocked us out of the Euros.”
While yet another England fan rejoiced: “Thank you Ireland for keeping those Welsh players away from Russia. I love this game!”
The comments from across the border may not be the last bitter pill Wales fans have to swallow – after news emerged they may now lose manager Chris Coleman following his side’s failure to qualify for Russia 2018.

Asked about his own future after the game, Coleman said: “I’m genuinely not thinking about it. There’s a dressing room full of devastated players and staff.
“There’s a chance I can stay and a chance I won’t. I can’t give an answer right now.”
"My contract is until the summer but, right now, I'm thinking about the experience. I'll go back to my family and take a bit of time. When the dust settles we'll see where we go."
