Former Tesco Ireland chief to take over as head of Morrisons in Britain

A FORMER Tesco Ireland chief is to replace the Irishman who stepped down last month as head of British supermarket chain Morrisons.

Dalton Phillips, a Wicklow native, left Morrisons after it saw struggling sales, in part due to budget supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl entering the field.

Previously head of Brown Thomas in Ireland, Mr Dalton had been head of the company since 2010.

Former Tesco Ireland chief David Potts will now take the reins at Morrisons. He will take up his new position from March 16.

With over 40 years’ experience in the industry, the supermaket has welcomed the new appointment.

Company chairman Andrew Higginson said: “David is the best retailer I have worked with in 25 years in the industry.

"Having worked alongside him for 15 years, I know he will bring to Morrisons a focus on the customer, a track record of delivery, flair, talent, and immense energy to his new role.”

Mr Potts began his career as a 16-year-old in Tesco, eventually working his way up the ladder to CEO of the company’s Irish businesses.
