Storm Georgina leaves fallen trees and debris on Irish roads following wild and windy night

STORM GEORGINA has left fallen trees and debris on roads across the country this morning as the windy and wet conditions swept over Ireland last night.

Two yellow weather warnings remain in place today including a nationwide wind alert with gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour.

Met Eireann forecaster Joanna Donnelly said: "Storm Georgina tracked to the north-west of Ireland overnight and is currently over the north-west coast of Scotland and it placed Ireland in a strong to gale force south-west air flow.

"So the strong and gusty south-west winds will continue today, but they have peaked now and they will ease somewhat in the morning, but it will remain a windy day."

The winds were at their strongest in the early hours of this morning.

A rainfall warning is also in place this morning for much of the southwest and northwest of the country.

Heavy rain will clear the southeast this morning, with sunny spells and scattered showers following, according to Met Éireann.

There’ll be further showers tonight, some heavy and with a risk of hail and thunder – especially in the north of the country, the weather service says.

Storm Georgina will move across the Irish sea and sweep the UK through today triggering travel chaos, flooding and power cuts.

It will bring a cold front across Britain bringing an abrupt end to the mild weather and sending temperatures plunging to -2C (28.4F) in parts.

Scotland and northern England are braced for further heavy snowfall before the weekend with harsh frost forecasts widely.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for strong winds across Scotland between midnight and 2 pm tomorrow.
