St Patrick's Day speeches kick off at Trafalgar Square with message from the Mayor

SAINT Patrick's Day 2015 celebrations are well under way at London's iconic city centre.

While the Mayor of London was not in attendance, Ireland's Ambassador to Britain Dan Mulhall spoke to the growing crowds in Trafalgar Square.

Boris Johnson appeared on a screen in his hometown to say he hopes the community enjoys everything during the day, and commended the Irish community.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Dan Mulhall recited The Lake Isle of Innnisfree Free, one of WB Yeats' most memorable works, a fitting choice in 2015 - the 150th anniversary of Yeats' birth.

"He was part of the Irish community in London 100 years ago," Mulhall said, speaking to the most recent Irish immigrants in the city.

Also speaking was Minister for the Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys, who is in London to represent the Irish government.

"Today is all about culture and community," she said.

Today's celebrations continue throughout the afternoon, with the parade well underway, due to end at Trafalgar Square, where Nelson's Column will go green at six o'clock this evening.
