St Patrick's Day celebrations underway around the world

ST PATRICK'S Day is being celebrated with parades around the world and across Ireland following a weekend of celebration in Britain.

Ireland's largest parade will get underway in Dublin at noon, where the theme is 'Let's Make History'.

The Dublin part follows well-attended parades across Britain over the weekend with London, Manchester, Birmingham and Coatbridge among the cities and towns that celebrated all things Irish on Saturday and Sunday.

As well as parades, St Patrick’s Day is being marked around the world with more than 100 international landmarks set to "go green" to mark the occasion.

The Great Wall of China, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and South Africa's Table Mountain are all being illuminated today.

In New York, Taoiseach Enda Kenny will take part in the city’s famed St Patrick's Day parade today despite on-going controversy about a ban on LGBT organisations marching with equality banners.

Last night Guinness became the latest corporate sponsor to withdraw support for the parade.

Mr Kenny is due to have a breakfast meeting later with New York mayor Bill de Blasio who has refused to march in the world's oldest and biggest St Patrick's Day parade over the parade’s ban on LGBT group’s marching with banners promoting equality.

Mr Kenny will walk alongside the GAA delegation, to mark the 100th anniversary of the GAA in New York.

Serving members of the Police Service of Northern Ireland will also march in the parade for the first time.
