Snow, ice and wind warnings in place in Ireland today

IT MAY be the last day of winter, but the grim conditions don’t seem to be going anywhere.

Ireland is bracing itself for more extreme weather conditions today as two yellow weather warnings have been issued for 12 counties.

According to Met Eireann, much of the country will be battered with snow, ice and gale force winds today.

A snow-ice warning was issued overnight for the counties of Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Louth and Leitrim, while a status yellow wind warning has been issued for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

The wind warning came into effect at 6am this morning and will remain in place until midnight tonight as winds reach 50-6- km/hr along the coast.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Cold, windy and very showery today with some winter sunshine in between showers.

"The focus of the showers will be across the west and north through the first half of the day, with the odd wintry fall of sleet and snow early on.

"Showers will become even heavier in turn later, merging to longer spells of rain, with the threat of hail and thunder throughout.

"Showery conditions will continue overnight - mainly affecting Atlantic counties, with the ongoing threat of thunder.

"Long clear spells too, especially across the midlands, south and east. Rather windy for a time also, in fresh and gusty northwest breezes.

"Some frost in sheltered spots by dawn with the risk of icy patches. Cold, with lowest temperatures of 1C to 3C.”

With the arrival of the first day of spring on Thursday, people can expect more cold and wintry spells with some bright and sunny spells throughout the day.
