Severe weather warnings in place in Britain and Ireland

SEVERE weather warnings remain in place in Britain and Ireland as strong winds, heavy rain and large waves are expected to cause further flooding along coastal areas.

In Britain, the Met Office has issued a yellow warning in southern parts of Scotland, southern Wales, northeast and south England. The warning urges people in those areas to expect heavy rain.

A yellow warning has also been issued for wind as gusts of up to 70mph are expected to hit the west and southeast coast of Britain today. The Met Office says this could lead to “exceptionally high waves” along the coast.

Flooding has been reported in Ireland this morning as the latest storm to hit Ireland sweeps in from the Atlantic.

Much of the west and south coast is expected to be hit badly as gale force winds, high tides and very high seas batter the country, particularly in counties Cork, Galway and Clare.

Met Éireann has issued an orange warning in Ireland, which means that all residents should prepare for winds, with gusts of 80 or 90km/h at first. These are expected to strengthen again tonight giving gusts of 120km/h.
