Severe weather warning issued as widespread snow and ice expected

A STATUS Yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for snow and ice across Britain. 

The weather waning is in effect until Friday morning, December 1.

Areas affected the by the warning include central England, Tayside & Fife East Midlands East of England Grampian Highlands, Eilean Siar, North East England, Orkney and Shetland, south west Scotland, Lothian Borders, Yorkshire and Humber.

The British weather body said: "Occasional heavy wintry showers are expected, mainly during Thursday afternoon and evening.

"Between two and five centimetres of snow may accumulate on ground above 100 metres, primarily over Scotland and northeast England.

"Meanwhile a centimetre or two is possible to low levels, with any low level accumulations across England being temporary.

"Journey times may be longer by road, bus and rail.

"Icy stretches are also expected to form on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths or where showers cause wash off on treated roads, particularly during Thursday evening and Friday morning."
