AS the final votes are counted after yesterday's same-sex marriage referendum, Irish senator Katherine Zappone has proposed to her partner Ann Louise Gilligan live on television.
The senator, who married Ms Gilligan in a life-partnership ceremony in 1982, was speaking with RTE broadcaster Miriam O'Callaghan on the live coverage of the referendum results.
After speaking directly to the camera, Ms Zappone said: "There's nothing like an Irish wedding, right?"
Her colleague, Senator David Norris, also pledged to be a flower girl at the ceremony.
Counting is almost done in the referendum - and the yes side appears to have won by a landslide.
