SIR SEAN Connery’s son, Jason, has issued a heartbreaking statement following the news of the James Bond icon’s sad death at the age of 90.
According to the Scottish star’s son, Connery had been “unwell for some time” prior to his passing.
Jason told the BBC that his dad died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at his home in the Bahamas.
He went on to pay tribute to his father, describing his death as a “sad loss for all people around the world”.
"We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time,” he told the BBC.
"A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor."
Tributes have been flooding in for the Edinburgh-born actor, whose family originated out of Ireland.
Fellow Bond star Daniel Craig described Connery as “one of the true greats of cinema” while Hugh Jackman was similarly effusive, telling fans on Twitter the Scot was “a legend on screen, and off”.
Dame Shirley Bassey, who sang the theme song to three James Bond films including Goldfinger, said she was "incredibly saddened to hear of Sean's passing.
"My thoughts are with his family. He was a wonderful person, a true gentleman and we will be forever connected by Bond."
Connery is survived by his wife Micheline Roquebrune, who he married in 1975, and sons Jason and Stephane.
