Regulars stunned as iconic Irish pub Pogue Mahone suddenly closes after 20 years

LOCALS have been left stunned after one of Liverpool’s best-loved Irish pubs closed its doors for the final time.

The team behind Pogue Mahone took to social media on Monday to announce that their lease at the Seel Street venue has ended.

The popular Irish bar had been a constant presence at the heart of Liverpool city centre for over 20 years.

“To all our great customers past and present, the team regrets to inform you that our lease has now ended,” they said on Facebook.

“Thank you to all the loyal customers, musicians and staff that made Pogue’s what it was.”

A firm favourite among Liverpool’s student population and anyone partial to a proper pint of Guinness, Pogue’s was also a popular spot for fans of GAA, football and rugby to watch their favourite teams play live.

The news has come as a shock to regulars of the Irish bar, with many quick to voice their sadness on Facebook.

“Very sad to see this bar close, it’s the best Irish bar in Liverpool! All the other Irish bars that have popped up come nowhere close. Good memories though,” wrote Julie Byrne.

“Gutted about this,” said Mick Dunne. “Don't go to town much these but always stop at Pogues. Last there for the Champs Lg final and it was a great night. Loved the impromptu music acts too! Sad day this!”

While Ken Baker added: “Where else in Liverpool on a Sunday night will we find the red underpants man stripping on a barrel, while we listen to some of the best music in town?

“Absolutely gutted, no other pub comes close to the atmosphere you get in the Pogue. Good luck to you all.”
