Rainfall warning issued for 16 counties in Ireland with thundery downpours expected

MET EIREANN have issued a rainfall warning across 16 counties as the summer heatwave looks set to come to an end.

The alert has been put in place for much of Leinster, the midlands and the north-west of the country.

Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal and Waterford will get the worst of the thundery downpours.

Met Eireann say that people can expect rainfall accumulations of between 25 to 40mm.

The warning is in place from 9.00pm Friday until 09.am Saturday morning.

The rain marks the end of almost two months of a dry spell across the country.

Water restrictions are expected to ease with the change in conditions over the weekend.

A second warning is in place Munster and parts of Leinster, where soil moisture deficits will remain in excess of 70mm in many parts both provinces.
