Pipe bomb explodes overnight outside shop in Co Louth

A PIPE BOMB exploded outside a shop in the town of Drogheda, Co Louth last night.

No one was injured in the explosion which happed outside a retail premises in the Moneymore housing estate around 12.30am.

The army disposal team were quickly on the scene and a number of homes were evacuated until the area was deemed safe at around 6.30am this morning.

Gardai in the town are investigating if there could be a link between the shooting of a man at a halting site last week.

One man received a number of injuries in the incident including gun shot wounds to his hand and back.

According to a Garda spokesperson: “Gardai responded to an incident that occurred at 12.30am on July 12, 2018 in Moneymore, Drogheda.

“A device had exploded under the frame of a retail premises causing damage to both the premises and to the front window of a house directly across from it.

“The EOD team were requested to attend and a number of houses were evacuated until the scene was declared safe by the EOD team at 6.30am."
