PLUCKY pensioner Nora Higgins today completed a fundraising challenge that many others wouldn’t touch with a barge pole.
The 81-year-old, who hails from Milltown in Co. Galway and is the Chair of the Southwark Irish Pensioners Forum, was first over the edge at Kings College Hospital, where she abseiled 100ft down the exterior of the Golden Jubilee Wing.
The brave Irishwoman was joined by Gogglebox’s Steph and Dom at the event, which was held to raise funds for the hospital’s Skin Cancer Unit.
Irish Post photographer Malcolm McNally, who was on hand to capture her impressive feat, said: “Nora was brilliant, she was the first one over the edge. I got butterflies just watching her.”
Ms Higgins, who is well known among the Irish community in Britain, underwent successful Mohs surgery at the hospital last year, which prompted her to give something back through her fundraising challenge.
“It wasn’t just the results that prompted me to take part, it was the whole experience at Kings,” she said.
Her fellow Southwark Irish Pensioners were on hand to support her today, watching on as Ms Higgins descended the building in a Millwall FC jersey – a club which the Forum has close links with.
