BRITAIN’S Foreign Secretary will discuss the potential Brexit today as part of the British-Irish Council Summit.
Philip Hammond MP is meeting with Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Charlie Flanagan TD in Dublin Castle to discuss Britain's membership of the EU, along with a range of other international issues.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Minister Flanagan said: “I am very pleased to welcome my colleague Philip Hammond back to Dublin.
“Since his first visit here as Foreign Secretary last December, he and I have kept in regular contact on international issues of mutual interest, in particular, the UK’s membership of the European Union.”
The EU was one of the major topics of the meeting of Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Prime Minister David Cameron yesterday, when they held talks at Downing Street.
The potential Brexit continues to dominate the headlines, as David Cameron has promised a referendum on Britain’s EU membership, while Ireland’s position is that Britain should remain in the union.
“In addition to EU matters, Foreign Secretary Hammond and I will discuss the ongoing crisis in the Mediterranean region, including the EU’s comprehensive response to the tragic loss of life, and the need to address the root causes of the current emergency,” Minister Flanagan added.
This bilateral meeting is part of the ongoing close engagement between the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and the British Foreign and Commonwealth office.
