Northern Irish teen charged after offensive social media post in the wake of Manchester attack

A NORTHERN Irish man has been charged after he posted an offensive message on social media after the Manchester atrocity. 

The 19-year-old was arrested on May 23, in North Belfast under the Malicious Communications Act in relation to material posted on social media about the Manchester attack.

He has been charged with the improper use of public electronic communications network and is expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court on June 19, the PSNI said.

Under the Malicious Communication Act, it is an offence to send a message that is grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character over a public electronic communications network.

All charges against the teen will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

The Manchester attack occured on May 22, at the MEN arena after an Ariana Grande concert.

A suicide bomber, named as Salmen Abedi 22, detonated his device in the foyer killing 22 and injuring 59 people.

Many of the victims were children and teenagers attending their first concert, with the youngest victim aged eight.
