Northern Ireland records 934 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, more than double the previous record

NORTHERN IRELAND has recorded 934 cases of Covid-19 in just 24 hours.

The new figure, announced by the Department of Health earlier today is more than double the previous record high recorded on Wednesday, when 424 cases were identified within the community.

The Department of Health also announced that one person has sadly died after contracting the virus. The victim is understood to be a man who passed away in hospital in the Armagh area.

However, the number of hospital inpatients with the virus has dropped despite the surge in cases, from 70 to 65.

201 new cases were identified in the Derry and Strabane council area, with 191 in Belfast and 182 in Newry and Mourne.

The spike in cases comes days after the Stormont Chief Scientific Advisor, Professor Ian Young, warned the six counties could see 1,000 cases per day by the end of the month if the country continues on its current path.

Speaking on Tuesday when Northern Ireland was recording an average of 250 cases a day, he stated that the number of cases is "doubling around every nine to ten days", and could experience "around 1,000 a day if we continue on current trends" a month from now.

The estimated timeline was exacerbated, however, with Northern Ireland recording 424 cases the very next day, and almost 1,000 on Friday.

New restrictions were recently introduced in Northern Ireland to slow the spread of the virus, however it will be at least one week before any positive effect is shown in the daily numbers.
