LONDONERS FAR and wide stripped off to ride the underground last Sunday as part of the 10th annual No Trousers Tube Ride.
As many as 500 brave souls descended on tube stations across the English capital which was inspired by a similar prank that first played out in New York back in 2002.
The No Pants Subway Ride started out with just a handful of enthusiasts riding the New York subway system but has since spread to over 60 different cities worldwide.
In cities from Tokyo to Moscow, people were getting involved in the action, with Londoners leading the way on this particular front.
Crowds met near the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square before setting off for the underground where they boarded trains on different Tube lines across the city.
The London edition was organised via the Facebook group The Stiff Upper Lip Society, it’s supposedly all about liberation, or something to that effect.
There are only two set rules. Firstly, you must take your trousers off while on the Underground and, secondly, you have to keep a straight face while doing it.
Well, that’s not quite all the rules.
Revealing undergarments were also banned with the Facebook group asking participants to “‘avoid thongs/budgie-smugglers/anything see-through though, as we aim to amuse, not offend, fellow Underground users”.
Speaking to Metro, 24-year-old participant Tessa Deterding explained what prompted her to strip off for the one-off tube ride.
“We read about it and thought it sounded hilarious. I wasn’t nervous about it,” she said.
“‘I quite like the sentiment behind it, instead of a stiff upper lip it’s having a bit of a laugh,” she said.
