GARDAÍ have launched a murder investigation following the fatal stabbing of a young man in Co. Waterford this morning.

The victim has been named locally as Jack Power, a 25-year-old fisherman from Brownstown in Dunmore East.

Mr Power was stabbed in the Shanakiel area of the coastal town at around 3.40am on Thursday.

He was taken to University Hospital Waterford but was pronounced dead a short time later.

A 17-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident is being held at Waterford Garda Station.

Local Sinn Féin councilor John Aherne paid tribute to the ‘kind and gentle’ Mr Power.

“I knew Jack he was kind and gentle,” the councillor posted on Facebook.

“His father is one of the most respected fishermen in Ireland. His mother is a complete lady.

“They were great neighbors and always a pleasure to meet.

“I know no words will be of comfort in this terrible time RIP Jack I will save my anger for those who could have prevented this for another day.”
