A FRENCH NUN'S sudden recovery from decades of debilitating back pain has been declared a miracle by the Catholic Church.
The proclaimed miracle is the 70th to have ever occurred at the pilgrimage site of Lourdes, according to the Catholic Church.
78-year-old Bernadette Moriau had suffered from a condition known as acute sciatic nerve trouble for much of her life, which made it very difficult for her to walk.
However, after returning from a trip to the grotto at Lourdes in south-west France in 2008, Sr Moirau has now recounted the moment she removed a brace and straightened her foot which had been positioned sideways for years and began to walk normally.
“I heard a voice saying ‘remove the apparatus’,” she told reports yesterday.
“In an act of faith, I took it off. To my great surprise, when I took away the brace and splints my foot was straightened out and I could move without feeling any pain. I just burst into tears.
“I cried a lot because sometimes we are overwhelmed by what happens to us. The following day, I walked five kilometres in the forest with my sister-in-law.”

Sr Moirau said she stopped taking the morphine she had been using in large doses for years and felt no pain nor any side-effects that often accompany the sudden withdrawal of such a strong painkiller.
The incredible recovery was described by her local bishop as the 70th miracle to have occurred at the shrine, a site that has attracted millions of worshippers since a peasant girl said she saw the Virgin Mary there in 1858.
