Merseyside Police close Irish flag burning investigation

MERSEYSIDE Police Force have closed their investigation into the Irish flag burning in Liverpool after the Crown Prosecution Service deemed there was insufficient evidence to continue the case.

The force confirmed to The Irish Post that no further action would be taken in the case surrounding the burning of the Tricolour outside the Liverpool Orange Order lodge in Everton Street last month unless new witnesses came forward.

The Irish community reacted angrily when video footage of a mob torching the flag was found on the liverpoolirishblog.com website in early June.

When The Irish Post contacted Merseyside Police they agreed to investigate the act.

However, last week a Merseyside Police Force spokesperson confirmed that no further action would be taken.

“The CPS stated there was insufficient evidence to prosecute at this time, although if any new evidence comes to light then the matter will be reviewed,” they said.

The force held an annual meeting last week to discuss security around the annual Orangemen July 12 marches in Liverpool.
