A PAIR of armed robbers stole thousands of pounds from the Corby Irish Centre over the weekend.
The masked men “barged” into the club as it was closing up after a busy weekend in the early hours of Monday morning and held up staff at gunpoint.
They demanded cash from the club secretary and stewardess, who were both still inside the centre on Patrick Road preparing for the following day, a spokesperson for the organisation told The Irish Post today.
“Everyone is ok thankfully, but in the early hours of Monday morning these guys came barging into the club wearing balaclavas with a gun and CS gas,” he explained.
“They threatened the few people still left in the bar, demanded the keys to the safe and unfortunately, after a very busy weekend, robbed us.”
The club, which was open for business today, has called a special committee meeting this evening where they will discuss the impact on the centre, which has just celebrated its 40th anniversary.
“We will discuss the incident tonight,” the spokesperson confirmed, “but we are trying to get things back to normal and support the stewardess. This is a horrible thing to happen to anyone.”
The robbers are thought to have fled with thousands of pound in cash from the popular Irish centre, and police are now calling for anyone with information to contact them.
A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police confirmed: “We were called to the Corby Irish Centre in Patrick Road, Corby, at 1.40am on Monday, November 3, to reports that two masked men had entered the property and held up the occupants with a firearm.
“The men fled the scene in a dark-coloured car and we would appeal for anyone who was in the area at this time, or who has any information about this incident to get in contact with us.”
Witnesses or anyone with information about the incident can call Northamptonshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 55511.
