A MAN and a woman have been arrested in Dublin after gardai recovered a gun and ammunition in the early hours from a bin in the city centre.
The arrests were made during a routine gardaí on patrol of Abbey Street shortly after midnight on the morning of Sunday, May 10.
Officers were alerted to a fight involving a couple and two homeless individuals while driving.
As they approached the group, gardai spotted the man involved attempting to hastily dispose of something in a nearby bin.
Upon closer inspection of the bin and items disposed, officers discovered a package contained wht was suspected to be a gun along with several rounds of ammunition.
The man, who was in his 30s, was arrested at the scene along with a woman in her 20s.
Both were taken to Store Street garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939 for questioning.
The firearm and ammunition, meanwhile, were taken to the Ballistics Section of the station for further analysis.
The man arrested is said to be from the Drimnagh area of Dublin.
According to reports he has previously served time in prison for armed robbery in a hold-up that involved a loaded gun.
The man was charged over the firearm and robbery and subsequently convicted to four years in prison.
The woman has no previous criminal record.
Despite the presence of a firearm neither are suspected of any involvement in criminal gang activity.
