Man shot in paramilitary-style attack in Derry this evening

POLICE have appealed for witnesses after a man sustained a potentially life-changing injury in a paramilitary-style shooting in Derry this evening.

The shooting occurred just after 6pm behind shops near Central Drive in the Creggan area of the city.

The 35-year-old man was admitted to hospital with a gunshot wound to his lower leg.

“It was reported that three masked men were involved in what was a vicious and sickening attack which has left this man with a serious and potentially life-changing injury,” said Detective Inspector Michael Winters

“There is absolutely no justification for this attack, we must all work together to bring those responsible to justice and to stop this from happening to anyone else.

“The people behind this attack should be seen for what they are, hypocritical thugs trying to exert coercive control over communities by creating a climate of fear.”

The incident follows two similar shootings that were carried out within minutes of each other last Friday night in the Ballymagroarty area of the city.

Anyone with information about the latest incident is asked to contact detectives at Strand Road on 101, quoting reference 1110 08/02/19.

Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
