Man seriously injured in machete attack in Waterford

A MAN has been left with serious injuries following a machete attack at his home in Waterford.

According to RTÉ News, the attack took place at around 3am this morning at a house in the St Herblain Park area of Waterford city.

It is understood that the attacker knocked on the door of the property and when it was answered by a man and a woman, the attacker barged into their home armed with a machete and began attacking those in the house.

The man sustained serious injuries in the attack, and the woman received a defensive cut to the hand.

While the victim's injuries are serious, they are not believed to be life threatening: he sustained a deep laceration to left thigh, a serious laceration to his knee and a cut to his right thigh.

The attacker then fled and the emergency services-- Gardaí and paramedics-- rushed to the scene.

There have been no arrests made in relation to the incident, RTÉ News reports, and Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the attack.

Anyone with information which may assist the investigation into the serious assault is urged to contact Gardaí by contacting the Waterford Garda Station on +353 51305300 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
