Man who died in Mayo fishing tragedy named locally

A FISHERMAN who died yesterday when his boat sank off the Mayo coast has been named locally as 57-year-old John Healy.

Mr Healy lost his life when Aisling Patrick, the fishing boat he was in capsized around 16 nautical miles north-west of Eagle Island in County Mayo.

Two other men in their 20’s were on board when the vessel got into difficulty at around 12.30pm.

The young men, also from the locality, were taken to Sligo University Hospital. They had signs of hypothermia but are recovering from the ordeal.

Mr Healy is originally from the Erris area of County Mayo.

A report on RTE’s Morning Ireland said: “It seems the three crew members managed to get on a life raft for around 40 to 50 minutes before they spotted a helicopter and released a flare, alerting the coastguard crew to their location."

The Marine Casualty Investigation Board has launched an investigation.
