The incident occurred at around 11.30pm last night in Castleblaney, and reportedly began when a man left the local Garda station and attempted to drive away in a silver Audi A6.

It is understood that a Garda attempted to stop the man when he drove off, dragging the officer approximately 500m along the road before crashing into a Skoda car parked on Main Street in the town.

A man aged in his 40s who had been sitting in the parked car was pronounced dead at the scene following the collision.

The Garda, who is in his late 20s, suffered a number of facial, head and leg injuries.

The driver of the silver Audi, a man in his 40s, was arrested and is being detained at Carrickmacross Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Main Street in Castleblaney was closed to facilitate an examination of the area by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and Crime Scene Examiners.

Local diversions are in place, and the road was expected to reopen this morning.

Witnesses are being urged to contact Carrickmacross Garda Station on 042 9690 190, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
