Fatal stabbing of man in Irish town may have been over card game dispute

A MAN HAS died after a fatal stabbing in an Irish town may have been over a card game dispute, it has emerged.

Polish national Marek Swider, 40 and had been living in Ireland for over ten years, was found on Dublin Street in Ballyjamesduff Co Cavan on New Year's Eve at 11pm.

Mr Swider was treated for serious stab wounds at Cavan General Hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after 9.30am yesterday morning.

Gardai have been in contact with Mr Swider's family in Poland.

The scene of the incident was sealed off for a technical examination and it is understood that a dispute over a card game may have led to Mr Swider's death.

A post-mortem examination has been carried out on his body, but gardaí say the results are not being released for operational reasons.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact them at Bailieboro Garda Station on 042-9694570.

They want to talk to anyone who was driving on the Dublin road in Ballyjamesduff between 10.30pm and midnight and who may have dashcam footage of the area.

They also want to speak to members of the Polish community or anyone who may have any information to contact them at Bailieboro, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
