Man who died in Co. Antrim collision named as 31-year-old US tourist

A MAN who died in a serious collision in Co. Antrim last night has been named as American man Michael Munro.

The 31-year-old from Orange, Connecticut died in a two-vehicle collision at around 7.10pm on Tuesday on the Gracehill Road near Armoy.

The location is close to the Dark Hedges, a popular tourist spot used as a shooting location for TV show Game of Thrones.

The Belfast Telegraph reports that Mr Monro may have been visiting Northern Ireland on honeymoon.

A woman aged in her 30s remains in hospital following the incident however her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Three roads remained closed this morning as the PSNI continued their investigation however they have since reopened.

Shock

Sinn Féin Councillor Cara McShane offered her conolences to the young man’s family.

“There is a deep sense of shock in the local community at the news of this accident,” she said.

“It is particularly sad given this young man had travelled to Ireland from the USA.

“Foremost in our minds right now is his family and friends and to everyone involved in this terrible tragedy.”

In a statement last night, UUP Councillor Darryl Wilson said increased tourist traffic in recent years had turned part of theGracehill Road into an ‘accident black spot’.

“This stretch of road has been an accident black spot over recent years with increased traffic due to local tourist attractions,” he said.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to all impacted by this awful tragedy.”
