Man from Cork jailed in Britain for manslaughter after shaken baby dies 18 years on

A MAN living in Cork has been jailed for manslaughter after a child he ‘violently shook’ died 18 years later.

Marc Guy, 43, of Commons Road, Lower Killeens, Co. Cork has been jailed for 21 months after pleading guilty to manslaughter at Newcastle Crown Court.

His victim, Ewan Marrin, was six months old when he was left with catastrophic brain injuries after being shaken by Guy at his County Durham home in 1998.

Guy, the then partner of Ewan’s mother, served 21 months for GBH in 1999 after the baby was left severely disabled and prone to epileptic seizures as a result of his injuries.

Ewan, 18, was found dead in his bed in May 2016, having gone to rest after suffering a bad fit.

Richard Wilson from the CPS said: “The CPS pieced together expert opinion, both of the medical notes from the original case and the results of the post-mortem examination, to show that the brain damage Ewan sustained almost 20 years ago was directly responsible for the violent seizures which ultimately led to his death.”

The Sunderland Echo reports that Peter Makepiece QC, defending, said Guy had undergone a ‘metamorphosis’ in the last 20 years.

He described Guy – who has since married and has a child of his own – as a ‘well-respected’ family man who runs a small freehold in Co. Cork and sells his produce locally.

It added that Guy was arrested after returning to Newcastle last November for his grandmother’s funeral.
