Man charged with the murder of former police officer in Co. Derry

A 27 YEAR-OLD man has appeared at the Bishop Street Courthouse in Derry after being charged with the murder of former police officer, Brian Coulter.

The victim – himself a 62 year-old man – was discovered in a flat in the village of Magherafelt on Monday 18 October.

The accused has been named as Sebastian Adrian Nowak of Colvil Street in East Belfast, having been charged with murdering the 62-year-old Bryan Coulter on an unspecified date between 13 and 18 October.

He faces an additional charge of assaulting a police constable on 18 October.

Appearing at Derry Magistrates’ Court, the 27 year-old is reported to have indicated that he understood the charges. He was assisted in this by a Polish interpreter.

His defence lawyer Ronan McCourt described Mr Nowak as having limited English.

Mr McCourt also said that there is no issue with the connection and no application for bail at this time.

District Judge Connolly remanded the defendant in custody until 17 November when he is due to appear at Magherafelt court via video-link.
