GARDAI have arrested a man after a "suspicious approach" was made on a five-year-old boy in Limerick on Sunday.
The man, who is aged in his 20s, was arrested after the incident on O'Connell Street in the city at around 1pm yesterday afternoon.
Gardaí say the man approached a child who was with his father outside a shop.
The suspect then fled after the boy's father intervened.
He remains in custody at Mayorstone Garda Station this morning.
In a statement, a Garda spokesman said detectives were investigating the "suspicious and unexplained" approach.
"A man was arrested by Gardaí a short time later in relation to the matter is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Mayorstone Garda Station where he will be medically assessed," they said.
"Investigating Gardaí are satisfied that this was an isolated incident. Enquiries are ongoing."
