Man arrested in Ireland over alleged threats to kill British MP

A man has been arrested in Ireland over alleged threats to kill a British MP.

The 41-year-old was detained following a search of a rented property in the Douglas area of Co. Cork on Saturday morning.

British police informed gardaí about the suspect, who is believed to be from England.

"During the course of the search a number of electronic items were seized and one man, 41, was arrested on suspicion of making threats against a person from outside of this jurisdiction," said a garda statement.

The man was held at Bridewell garda station in Cork under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act

According to the Sunday World, he has since been charged and will appear before Cork District Court today.

The target of the threats is believed to be female Labour MP, reports The Irish Times.

The paper adds that a man phoned the MP on October 18 and allegedly threatened to kill her.

The call was made just three days after Conservative MP David Amess was stabbed to death at his constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

The suspect in that case, Ali Harbi Ali, 25, is due to appear at a plea hearing in December.

Meanwhile on October 27, a 52-year-old man from Halifax was arrested on suspicion of making threats against Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner.
