A MAN in his early 60s has died after getting into trouble on Mangerton Mountain in Co. Kerry.
Emergency services were called to help the hiker, who was understood to be 62, at around 12.40pm on Monday.
Kerry Mountain Rescue and the Shannon-based Coast Guard rescue helicopter were deployed following the alert.
However, low cloud hampered attempts by the helicopter crew to reach the site.
A team of paramedics were instead airlifted to a drop-off point as close as possible to an area known as the Devil’s Punchbowl – where the man was reported to have taken ill.
Rescue teams managed to reach the man and took him down the mountain.
Sadly, he died before he could be brought to hospital.
The man’s body has since been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Kerry where a post-mortem investigation will take place today.
