GARDAÍ in Co. Cork have launched an investigation after a middle-aged man was fatally shot at a rural farmhouse last night.
The incident occurred at Raleigh, 5km outside the town of Macroom, at around 11.30pm.
The 58-year-old victim was able to raise the alarm by phoning a friend who in turn called the emergency services, according to reports.
He was treated on scene for a gunshot wound but was pronounced dead a short time later.
His body remains at the scene which is currently being preserved, and the Office of the State Pathologist has been notified.
Gardaí said they were investigating "all of the circumstances surrounding the death".
The services of the Garda Technical Bureau have been requested by investigating officers and an incident room has been established at Macroom Garda Station.
Update (11.30am): A man in his 60s has been arrested and is being questioned at Bandon Garda Station.
