AN ELDERLY couple in Dublin were lucky to escape with their lives after their house was set on fire in the middle of the night.
As reported by Dublin Live, the couple, who live in Kilnamanagh in Tallaght, were targeted by thugs in the early hours of Sunday morning.
It is alleged that a group of people doused the couple's front door with lighter fluid before setting it on fire at around 2.30am when the couple were asleep upstairs.
The alarm was raised, and thankfully the couple escaped from their home uninjured.
A local Neighbourhood Watch group confirmed the incident, claiming the couple have been subjected to a campaign of targeted harassment, and urged anyone with information to come forward, particularly anyone who may have video footage of the attack.
A spokesperson for the community group wrote:
"I would ask that you ask people in the area with cameras or monitored doorbells etc to check their footage and motion notifications from last night to see if they picked up anything and forward to the Gardaí.
"It happened around 2 - 2.30 am.
"They could have died and you’d ask yourself what will the perpetrators do next if they are happy to set an elderly couples house on fire!"
Gardaí in Tallaght are understood to be investigating the incident and are working on the basis that the attack was intentional.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Gardaí in Tallaght on 01 666 6000.
