WATERFORD Airport’s future has been secured with the news that its route to London will be restored.
Belgian-based VLM Airlines will operate 12 weekly flights in each direction between Waterford and Luton airports, as well as continuing the existing Birmingham route.
Flights between London and the only airport in the south-east of Ireland were pulled in 2013 – and budget airline Flybe recently announced it would end the services between Waterford and Manchester and Birmingham.
The news meant that the airport would have been left with no commercial flights.
The VLM flights are set to start on April 27th – with twice-daily weekday flights to Luton, as well as once daily flights on weekends, and four weekly services to Birmingham.
The move is seen as a major boost to tourism in in south-east of Ireland and has been welcomed by the airport.
“Both services will be a key driver for incoming tourists from the UK, especially at a time when the Eurozone is particularly attractive to UK travellers,” said Desmond O’Flynn, CEO of Waterford Airport.
“For those from the south-east taking a city break, the great world city of London is once again readily accessible.”
