AN Islington councillor has been elected Chair of the London Irish Councillors Network.
Troy Gallagher, a Labour councillor in the Bunhill ward, will take up his new position ahead of the elections this May.
Cllr Gallagher said: “I am delighted to have been elected by my fellow councillors to this important role. The Irish community has been at the heart of London for generations, but sometimes the challenges the community faces are not given the attention they deserve.”
The London Irish Councillors Network has been established for 12 years and was set up to to 'support councillors of Irish origin or descent to consider ways of redressing the disadvantages experienced by London’s largest invisible ethnic minority'.
It also assists vulnerable members of the Irish and the Irish Traveller communities, while working with the Irish in Britain organisation and other groups.
The Network meets throughout to year and invites speakers from a range of organisations to its events.
“I will be working with councillors from across London to make sure that the Irish community has a strong voice in our capital,” added Cllr Gallagher.
Cllr Gallagher was elected to the role of Chair this month following the passing of Gerry Ryan, a long-term Labour councillor for the Selhurst ward in Croydon, who died earlier this year.
