A PACKED day of events takes place tomorrow (September 13) at the London Irish Centre in Camden to mark its 60th anniversary.

The charity organisation, initially founded to support the many thousands of Irish who arrived in the 1950s wave of emigration, is hosting a special programme throughout the day and into the evening.

Celebrations kick off at the centre’s base in Camden Square, north London, with an afternoon tea dance and social starting at 2pm.

Photographs from the Centre's history, such as those featured below, will also be on display.

The day event is aimed at many of its older clients who have been connected with the centre for decades.

A drinks reception will then be hosted at 6pm. The evening will be attended by the Irish Ambassador for Britain Dan Mulhall.

The London Irish Centre, which received £557,000 from the emigrant support programme (ESP) last year, offers the largest welfare service for Irish people outside of Ireland.

It also hosts an arts and cultural programme, which has recently included a pop-up London version of Tedfest, a day-long comedy homage to the much-loved Channel 4 programme Father Ted.

Although the event on September 13 is free, the centre is suggesting a charitable donation of £19.54 for the evening event, which can be paid on the night.

The cost will be used to subsidise the cost of an afternoon tea dance and party taking place earlier on the day.
