The Institute of Irish Studies at the University of Liverpool is bringing together a panel of experts to discuss Irish re-unification.
The distinguished panel consists of Fergal Keane, BBC World News, Stephen Collins, Political Editor of the Irish Times, Tom Hartley, former Sinn Féin Lord Mayor of Belfast and Dr Kevin Bean from the Institute of Irish Studies.
The discussion, at 6pm on Thursday May 3, will be chaired by Professor Marianne Elliott, Director of the Institute of Irish Studies who is internationally recognised as one of Ireland’s leading historians.
Marianne played an important role in the promotion of peace efforts in Northern Ireland most notably serving on the Opsahl Commission in 1993 and co-writing its report, 'A Citizens' Inquiry'.
She said: "Since the partition of Ireland in 1920, its re-unification has remained the focus of nationalist culture, Republican activity and Unionist fears. After the end of the Northern Ireland Troubles, we can now debate the issue in a less heated and dangerous climate.
“The Institute of Irish Studies at the University of Liverpool has brought together this prestigious panel to ask whether the violence deterred or assisted Irish unity, whether, after all this time anyone really wants it or whether it is a realistic option anytime soon."
The discussion will take place before a large public audience and is anticipated to excite considerable interest in Britain and Ireland.
