CONOR MCGREGOR provided Tyson Fury with a few extra drops of Irish courage in the build-up to the Gypsy King’s famous victory over Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas.
Fury put in a peerless performance to end the American’s five-year reign as WBC heavyweight world champion winning in seven sensational rounds at the MGM Arena.
With McGregor’s whiskey brand one of the big sponsors on the night, Fury found himself on the receiving end of a special gift from the Notorious himself: a bottle of Proper Twelve whiskey.
Not that the Gypsy King needed the luck of the Irish all that much.
Flooring Wilder in the third and fifth round, Fury was already well on his way to victory when the American’s team threw in the towel midway through the seventh.
Ahead of the fight, Fury had thanked McGregor for the whiskey and promised to party long into the night if he secured victory.
“Thank you very much, Conor. I appreciate it,” Fury told The Mac Life. “I’m going to get smashed out me f—king face after the fight. If you’re in Vegas let’s do it together.”
As with his promise to knock down Wilder rather than score the victory on points many had predicted, Fury was true to his word, taking time out in the aftermath of the win to deliver a memorable two-minute rendition of Don McClean’s American Pie.
Though it’s not clear whether McGregor and Fury did get together for that well-earned drop of whiskey, wherever the Notorious is, he was surely raising a glass to the Gypsy King after what is likely to be remembered as the defining victory of his career.
