The German retailer is planning to have Irish branches free of black plastic by August 2019.
Lidl Ireland have vowed to reduce their black plastic use from their stories.
The supermarket has announced they have scrapped single-use plastic items from October 8 and intend to disuse other plastics instore.
Lidl Ireland tweeted: "We're excited to announce the removal of black plastic from our fruit and veg range by Christmas, with more fresh products to follow. We'll be the first supermarket in Ireland to do so, and it'll result in the removal of over 65 tonnes of black plastic waste every year."
The supermarket chain plans to have all black plastic removed from fruit and veg by Christmas 2018, black plastic removed from all fresh fish by February 2019 and black plastic removed from all fresh meat, poultry and cured meat by August 2019.
The single-use plastic items the stores plan to will be replaced with bio-degradable alternatives.
