VETERAN Irish broadcaster Gay Byrne has revealed that he may have prostate cancer.
"I shall not be with our listeners on this day next week. I have to go to hospital this week," the 82-year-old told listeners of his Lyric FM radio show last night.
"They think they may have discovered a bit of cancer in the prostate and they think it may have moved up into my back."
The radio presenter went on the explain that he would be visiting the hospital for 'all sorts of tests'.
But he ended his unexpected announcement with typical good humour saying 'I've had the most wonderful, fantastic, robust, good health all my broadcasting life. It's my turn now' before thanking fans for their good wishes.
The popular Irish presenter is an RTÉ icon, best known for hosting The Late Late Show from 1962 until 1999.
He currently hosts a two-hour music and chat show, Sunday with Gay Bryne on RTÉ’s Lyric FM.
“Gay Byrne’s friends and colleagues wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming him back in the coming weeks,” RTÉ said in a statement today.
Here's just some of what well-wishers had to say about the legendary Irish broadcaster on Twitter...
