LARRY THE Cat is being tipped to occupy No.10 Downing Street longer than Boris Johnson despite the new Prime Minister's pledges regarding the Irish backstop.
Speaking outside the Downing Street, Johnson promised to "change the country for the better" adding that the UK would leave the EU on 31 October "no ifs, no buts.”
"I am convinced we can do a deal, without checks at the Irish border, because we refuse under any circumstances to have such checks and yet without that anti-democratic backstop," Johnson said.
"I will take personal responsibility for the change I want to see; never mind the backstop, the buck stops here," he added.
"The British people have had enough of waiting, the time has come to act, to take decisions … to change this country for the better."
Writing in his final column for the Daily Telegraph earlier this week, Johnson said the UK needed to rekindle its “can-do spirit” with regards to the Irish backstop impasse, drawing comparisons with the Apollo 11 moon landings.
“If they could use hand-knitted computer code to make a frictionless re-entry to Earth’s atmosphere in 1969, we can solve the problem of frictionless trade at the Northern Irish border,” he said.
Despite his enthusiasm for the task at hand, Johnson is the odds-on favourite with Ladbrokes to leave Downing Street before Larry the cat. with the loveable moggie chalked up at 6/4 to outstay another Prime Minister.
Jessica O'Reilly of Ladbrokes said: "Larry's seen off David Cameron and Theresa May, and the odds suggest he's going to get the Tory treble up and last longer in No.10 than Boris Johnson."
