Lambeg drum to take centre stage in Dublin New Year's Eve celebrations

A LAMBEG drum, more commonly associated with the annual Twelfth of July unionist and Orange Order parades in the North, is set to play a role in Dublin's New Year's celebrations.

The instrument is one of 50 different drums set to play a part in a very special performance taking place on the city's River Liffey.

Under the shadow of the nearby Custom House, a pontoon of drums floating in the middle of the river will sound as part of a event billed as the 'Liffey Lights Midnight Moment'.

The performance is set to include a choreographed laser show and live DJ set alongside the central percussion-based performance.

It also includes a special matinee performance designed for families looking to celebrate the occasion.

The use of a Lambeg drum could yet court controversy.

Ireland rugby star Brian O'Driscoll previously came under fire for using the instrument during a Twelfth of July event in County Armagh back in July.

The drum-led spectacle isn't the only musical event taking place in Dublin on New Year's Eve though.

There's also the 3Countdown Concert featuring singer-songwriter Gavin James and special guests Hudson Taylor, Wild Youth and InHaler.
