Kilmainham Gaol tops list of best Irish landmarks

DUBLIN’S Kilmainham Gaol is Ireland’s number one landmark, according to TripAdvisor.

The travel site’s Travellers’ Choice awards for Landmarks named it the country’s most popular attraction for 2015.

Kilmainham Gaol is one of the largest unoccupied prisons in Europe, covering some of the most heroic and tragic events in Ireland’s history between the 1780s and 1920s.

Visitors are treated to a major exhibition detailing the political and penal history of the gaol and its restoration.

TripAdvisor spokesperson James Kay said: “The Travellers’ Choice Landmarks, now in its third year, highlight some of the world’s most iconic, must-see attractions that have won over the TripAdvisor community.”

In addition, both Dublin and Dingle have an equal number of attractions in Ireland’s top ten.

Dublin also boasts Chester Beatty Library (4) while Dingle is home to East Tower (3) and St James Church (10).

Travellers’ Choice Landmarks awards honour top landmarks worldwide based on the millions of valuable reviews and opinions from TripAdvisor travellers over a 12 month period.
