Just 9 new coronavirus cases confirmed in Ireland- lowest since 11 March

THERE HAVE been just 9 newly confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Republic of Ireland, the lowest daily figure since before lockdown came into effect.

The Department of Health yesterday confirmed that as of 5.45pm on Monday, 8 June, just 9 new cases have been reported from laboratories across the country, raising hopes that Ireland's strict social distancing restrictions are having the desired effect.

The lowest daily figure since 11 March, before schools, colleges, pubs and mass gatherings were banned, brings Ireland's total number of confirmed cases to 25,207.

It is the most positive news in the Republic's fight against coronavirus since the country recorded zero Covid-19 deaths at the end of May.

While this has not happened since, the figures are continuing to drop-- and in the North, there have been three days with no reported coronavirus deaths, with two consecutive days earlier this week.

Sadly, alongside the news that the Republic had recorded its lowest number of new cases in 89 days came the confirmation that four more people had died after contracting the virus.

There have now been a total of 1,683 Covid-19 related deaths in Ireland.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan, speaking at yesterday's press briefing, stressed that the "mission has not been accomplished" and that we are "only halfway through this".

"It has been 100 days since we reported our first case of COVID-19," he said yesterday.

"Since then, it has been the collective effort of our health service and general public that has limited the spread of the virus. As we enter Phase 2, it is vital to keep up a compliance with public health advice."
