JOE BIDEN has made history by becoming the most voted-for candidate in any US Presidential election.
The Irish American is currently embroiled in a knife-edge race for the presidency against the incumbent Donald Trump, and there is no clear winner more than 48 hours after the polls closed.
Whether Mr Biden wins the Electoral College vote or not, he has already made history by securing more votes from the general population than any other candidate in American history.
The title was previously held by Barack Obama, who broke the record when he received 69.4 million votes in the 2008 US Election.
The 2020 Presidential Election has already seen a higher voter turnout than any time in the past 120 years, due in part to the significance of the election and the Covid-19 pandemic which saw over 100 million people vote early or via mail-in ballots.
As things stand, Joe Biden currently has more than 72 million votes, or 50.4% of the popular vote.
President Trump, meanwhile, currently holds over 68.6 million votes, and with mail-in ballots still being counted, there is a possibility he too could beat Barack Obama's 2008 record.
Mr Trump had falsely declared victory in the election at around 2am on 4 November, before millions of mail-in votes had been counted, and is now alleging electoral fraud, even threatening to sue multiple states.
It was anticipated that the mail-in ballots would favour Mr Biden, with Democrats more likely than Republicans to have voted early or through the mail-in option.
There is no clear winner in the race for the presidency yet, but Mr Biden is currently leading with 264 Electoral votes to Mr Trump's 214.
270 Electoral College votes are needed to secure the presidency.
