James McClean in heartwarming gesture to the homeless as Irishman pays for food and shelter for six rough sleepers

REPUBLIC of Ireland and Stoke City winger James McClean has made a lovely gesture to the homeless in his native Derry.

McClean, who has become well-known for his selfless acts of kindness in recent years, dug into his pockets once again to allow six rough sleepers to stay at Maldron Hotel Derry this week.

The 29-year-old's sister Mary-Jane took to Facebook to reveal her brother's latest good deed with friends and family.

"My brother has a huge heart him & Erin just paid for 6 homeless people to stay in the Maldron Hotel till Wednesday with food," she wrote.

"We're just away collecting them now & taking them to the hotel. Already left a wee man to the hotel who lays at Foyleside. The critter is buzzing going to get collect more now you are a credit James McClean & Erin McClean!"

The footballer has made a number of generous donations in the past – including £3,000 to help pay for the medical bills of a 17-month-old toddler with cancer, £1,000 towards the funeral costs of a child killed in a car crash and buying a hand-cycle bike for a young girl with Spina Bifida.

And last year, McClean gave a young Down Syndrome team who couldn't find any opponents the experience of a lifetime, when the Irish star and his mates took on the inspiring youngsters of Oxford Bulls in a friendly match.

What a man!
