Irishman stole €251 worth of alcohol and condoms, court hears

A YOUNG Irishman stole €251 worth of alcohol and condoms from a Letterkenny supermarket, a court has heard.

Michael Devine, 18 and from Raphoe, Co Donegal, appeared before Letterkenny District Court earlier today charged with theft at Tesco earlier this month on November 4.

According to Donegal Daily, Devine, an architecture student at Letterkenny Institute of Technology, chose not to be legally represented.

The court heard that the accused was caught when alarms went off at the store when he left without paying for the goods.

Devine told the court: "I’ve never done anything like that before. I didn’t have any money. I’m in college and I get a grant. I’m doing architecture in LYIT. It was a stupid idea.”

The court heard that Devine had no previous convictions.

Judge Paul Kelly adjourned the case until January 22 2018 for a probation report on the accused.

“I’m concerned that as a young person just gone 18 the ramifications for you will be down the road,” added Judge Kelly.
